So my blog has fallen behind, but I do have a reason- my kids- which makes it okay right. My oldest is playing travel soccer and travel baseball. The girls are in ballet. And my sweetheart has been traveling a lot. So if this is the only place I have neglected it's not to bad. We do have clean clothes and I still find time to design new things!

Our Oldest "O" is playing travel soccer this year and we have been so busy running him back and forth-you'd think the rest of us would be in shape-ha! The kids have gone back to school!! ALL 4 of them! With their backpacks filled with all of their supplies and not a tear in any eyes! Its been a great week.

The boys both love their teachers and are happy to be back with their friends.

The girls are so excited that they get to go to school-- the little grins they had in the car on the way were to precious.

I was very hesitant to read the Twilight series and I must say that Stephanie Meyer did an amazing job, and I am hooked! The movie was a good tween flick- and they did an outstanding job casting. I am eager to see what the new director has in store for New Moon! More than that I am amazed at the talent these actors have outside of movies. For example Robert Pattinson- who plays Edward of course- is an amazing musician, and I really hope that even though his acting career is taking off that he continues in his music. Even if he has to take on a diffrent alias other than Bobby to continue- it would be a shame if he didnt.

As most of you know I own a children's clothing business, and as of February 10, myself and thousands of others in the children's industry will be deeply affected financially or will be out of business. Remember the outcry last holiday season over lead in imported toys? In order to combat such safety issues, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has passed legislation called the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). The law sets stringent guidelines for children's products containing lead and phthalates (a chemical used in some vinyl products). It is supposed to go into effect February 10th, 2009, and after that date any product intended for children ages 12 and under must meet these guidelines, and have a certificate of compliance from a CPSC-accredited laboratory. This includes not just toys, but clothing, jewelry, blankets, sheets, books, bibs, strollers, carriers, and anything else that a child under 12 might come in contact with. Sounds great, right?
In theory, maybe. But in actuality the law is so far reaching that it may succeed in turning the economy upside down. For starters, the CPSIA requires end unit testing on every product intended for use by children under 12. It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to do this testing, regardless of how small the business. That means that manufacturers (like myself ) will have to pay to get every different product they offer tested. These tests have to be done at a CSPC accredited lab, and cost tens of thousands of dollars. For example if you offer 3 different types of dresses. Each dress contains 2 different fabrics, as well as buttons, and thread, so that's potentially $600 to test one dress. But if you have 3 or more styles, that's $1800. And when you get a new bolt of fabric, you need to start all over again.
At present, there are no exemptions for small businesses and "micro" manufacturers and most handcraft artisans. There is no exception for quantities made, where the garments/products are made or anything else. Nor is there an exception for unadorned fabric components, unfinished wood components, materials which, by their nature, are free of lead and phthalates.
Also, the Act takes a "guilty until proven innocent" approach, which would treat a handmade, unfinished wooden toy that doesn't meet the certification deadline of 2/10/09 as a "banned hazardous substance" which would be illegal to distribute in this country. Each infraction carries a $100,000 felony charge. This legislation is also retroactive for any pre-existing inventory as of February 10th, 2009. This means that everything on the shelves in those big (or small) stores will also be "banned, hazardous substances" - contraband.
Larger corporations that can afford testing will incur thousands, maybe millions of dollars in fees, and this expense will be handed down to the consumer, probably making the prices for children's products go through the roof.
This also means that after that date, even selling your kids old things on eBay or Craigslist will be illegal. Charities will not be able to accept donations without a certificate of compliance either. February 10, 2009 is being dubbed "National Bankruptcy Day" by many people in the apparel and toy industry. If this legislation is not amended, it will affect everyone from port workers to parents looking for legal products. Billions of dollars worth of children's products will have to be destroyed because they can't be legally sold, and this will cause major environmental problems.
While I am all for higher safety standards and keeping our kids safe, this law is so overreaching as to put thousands on manufacturers of children's products out of business -hurting our economy and causing even more loan defaults. Though this legislation was well-intentioned, it cannot be allowed to stand as is.
Please help us defend the American dream and our entrepreneurial spirit! This law affects every stay at home mom trying to help put food on the table and every grandmother knitting blankets for the local craft fair. It makes the thousands of us who have found a niche in the burgeoning children's market have to make a tough decision - continue to produce items illegally and possible incur a $100,000 fine, pay the enormous fees and raise costs of goods sold, or close up shop!

I took this month off from ebay to play with the kids and try to get some Spring inspiration. I must say I've done the kid thing..but haven't even got an ounce of inspiration to design.

The kids are still at such a great age for Christmas. The girls love all of the decorations and want more princess "stuffs" from Santa. The boys are a little harder since all they seem to want are electronics to some degree. I hope that they all get their Christmas Wishes!!!

My mom emailed this to me today! I laughed so hard- and just had to share it!!

This has to be the most accurate description I have ever read. and the funniest. Well worth the time. I can hear my mother saying 'I told you so!'

When you have to visit a public bathroom, you usually find a line of women, so you smile politely and take your place. Once it's your turn, you check for feet under the stall doors. Every stall is occupied.

Finally, a door opens and you dash in, nearly knocking down the woman leaving the stall.
You get in to find the door won't latch. It doesn't matter, the wait has been so long you are about to wet your pants! The dispenser for the modern 'seat covers' (invented by someone's Mom, no doubt) is handy, but empty. You would hang your purse on the door hook, if there was one, but there isn't - so you carefully, but quickly drape it around your neck, (Mom would turn over in her grave if you put it on the FLOOR! ), yank down your pants, and assume ' The Stance.'

In this position your aging, toneless thigh muscles begin to shake. You'd love to sit down, but you certainly hadn't taken time to wipe the seat or lay toilet paper on it, so you hold 'The Stance.'

To take your mind off your trembling thighs, you reach for what you discover to be the empty toilet paper dispenser. In your mind, you can hear your mother's voice saying, 'Honey, if you had tried to clean the seat, you would have KNOWN there was no toilet paper!' Your thighs shake more.

You remember the tiny tissue that you blew your nose on yesterday - the one that's still in your purse. (Oh yeah, t he purse around your neck, that now, you have to hold up trying not to strangle yourself at the same time). That would have to do. You crumple it in the puffiest way possible. It's still smaller than your thumbnail

Someone pushes your door open because the latch doesn't work. The door hits your purse, which is hanging around your neck in front of your chest, and you and your purse topple backward against the tank of the toilet. 'Occupied!' you scream, as you reach for the door, dropping your precious, tiny, crumpled tissue in a puddle on the floor, lose your footing altogether, and slide down directly onto the TOILET SEAT .... It is wet of course. You bolt up, knowing all too well that it's too late.. Your bare bottom has made contact with every imaginable germ and life form on the uncovered seat because YOU never laid down toilet paper - not that there was any, even if you had taken time to try. You know that your mother would be utterly appalled if she knew, because, you're certain her bare bottom never touched a public toilet seat because, frankly, dear, 'You just don't
KNOW what kind of diseases you could get.'

By this time, the automatic sensor on the back of the toilet is so confused that it flushes, propelling a stream of water like a fire hose against the inside of the bowl that sprays a fine mist of water that covers your butt and runs down your legs and into your shoes. The flush somehow sucks everything down with such force that you grab onto the empty toilet paper dispenser for fear of being dragged in too.

! At this point, you give up. You're soaked by the spewing water and the wet toilet seat. You're exhausted. You try to wipe with a gum wrapper you found in your pocket and then slink out inconspicuously to the sinks.

You can't figure out how to operate the faucets with the automatic sensors, so you wipe your hands with spit and a dry paper towel and walk past the line of women still waiting.

You are no longer able to smile politely to them. A kind soul at the very end of the line points out a piece of toilet paper trailing from your shoe. (Where was that when you NEEDED it??) You yank the paper from your shoe, plunk it in the woman's hand and tell her warmly, 'Here, you just might need this.'

This is dedicated to women everywhere who deal with a public restrooms (rest??? you've GOT to be kidding!!). It finally explains to the men what really does take us so long. It also answers their other commonly asked questions about why women go to the restroom in pairs. It's so the other gal can hold the door, hang onto your purse and hand you Kleenex under the door!

Okay so I have a thing for vintage Cartoons. Here is my tribute to the Peanut Gang. A twirl jumper top featuring Snoopy, Charlie and the gang. A sash/ belt. The top has been paired up with adorable ruffled jeans with buttons galore. The contrasting yellow with primary dots just makes the outfit pop. We took the kids to the Cider Mill the other day and I was stopped so many times by people asking about this outfit.

The kids are out of school and they have the long lazy days of July and August ahead. They could spend their summer days in front of the TV or your children could be using their imaginations to create projects that are a reflection of their own unique talents.

Creative and artistic are not the same thing. Creativity is an approach to life. Creative thinkers know that problems have many different solutions. When they encounter an obstacle, they find a way around rather than giving up. They have to be willing to take risks as they learn new skills. These are important life skills that need to be encouraged in children.

Summer activities, children's crafts and science projects give children the opportunity to learn and practice these skills. Even if they follow a project guide exactly, they will still to make decisions about shades of colors and where to place items. Once they are familiar with the project, most children will want to make it again. That is when they get really creative. First the colors change, then the shapes, and suddenly it is a new project from their own imagination.

Creative projects encourage children to find the resources to make what they want, rather than opening up a box that has all the supplies in one place.

Watermelon and Sprinkler
Watermelons are so sticky and messy in the house. Instead, just cut a whole watermelon into enough pieces for your kids and their friends, then send them outside and turn on the sprinkler. You don't even have to watch it, just let them loose to get as sticky and wet as they want.

Think "Fort"
You know how much you loved it when you were a kid. Use sheets, blankets, or comforters over tables and chairs. Put a lamp, pillow, books, games, and snacks in the "tent". A giant appliance box is the perfect fort, of course, but it's a bit harder to find appliance boxes these days. Visit a nearby furniture store with your kids in tow. Bet they'll find one for you quickly. If you have access to some lumber scraps, older and younger kids will work together to build a tree house.

Laughter is a tonic! It helps reduce stress, increase creativity and build stronger relationships, especially in families. What better way to smile than to listen to the humorous, eye-opening and thought-provoking things kids say.

My son- Aiden- was upset about of all things his DS game not going the way he wanted and said "Oh Fiddle Stix"- I just started laughing and asked where he had learned it- he shrugged his shoulders and went back to playing. It was so innocent and untainted by all of the other possible words that he could put in at that moment- you know the words they learn on the playground and you never want to hear! I have heard him say this phrase on more than one occasion and I just think it is the cutest thing

My girls are still young so they say goofy things alot- the Television is the TVB? They call each other by the wrong name- their own.

Well I would like to start out on a personal note! My girls have moved into big girl beds. They are both so proud of them and show anyone that understands them their biggirlbeds(all one word). Along with becoming big girls they have decided to become girly girls and only wear skirts and dresses. Well it is offical, today is my 32nd birthday. The gray hair keeps coming, and the aches have started. Its funny becasue I remember when my mom was 32, I didn't think she was old. But my boys have no mercy. My oldest,Owen, thinks I had to watch cartoons on the Radio. And, my youngest boy, Aiden tells me that I should stop having birthdays because I am gettting toooooo old!

A Mom's Life

I received this email from a friend- and thought it summed up my life!

Recently, I was diagnosed with C. A. A. D. D. - Child Activated
Attention Deficit Disorder.

This is how it manifests:

I decide to do the laundry. As I start toward the basement, I notice that there are cheerios all over the floor and my house keys are in the cereal bowl. I decide to pick up the cheerios before I do the laundry.

I lay my keys down on the counter, put the cheerios in the trash can under the counter, and notice that the trash can is full. So, I decide to take out the trash.

But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I
take out the trash I may as well pay the bills first. I take my check book off the table, and see that there is only one check left, my extra checks are in my desk in the office, so I go to my desk where I find a sippy cup full of juice. I'm going to look for my checks, but first I decide I should put the sippy cup in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the sippy cup a plant on the counter catches my eye--it needs to be watered. I set the sippy cup on the counter, and I discover baby wipes that I've been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back in the bathroom, but first
I'm going to water the plants. I set the wipes back down, fill a container with water and suddenly I spot the TV remote, left on the kitchen table.

I realize that when I go to watch TV, I will be looking for the
remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the plants.

I splash some water on the plant, but most of it spills on the floor.

So,I set the remote back down, get some paper towels and wipe up the spill.Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to
do.

At the end of the day: the laundry isn't washed, the bills aren't
paid, there is a warm cup of juice sitting on the counter, the plants aren't watered, there is still only one check in my check book, I can't find the remote, I can't find the wipes, and I don't remember what I did with my keys.

Then when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day long, and I'm really tired.

I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail.

While I was fooling around on the computer last night. I ran across this little ditty-

MY WANT(since Thanksgiving)

I have wanted a pair of these black Hunter Wellington boots since Thanksgiving, I strongly suggested and hinted this to anybody that would listen, but alas still no boots. I also want a pair for the girls in red. The only problem with my master plan is We live in Michigan. We barely get a spring here it goes from snowing and freezing to muggy and sticky. So I pondered this trying to justify a purchase that I knew I didn't NEED. I could get the fleece liners for them and call them my winter boots. Well, that was a good plan with the exception of I received a new pair the year prior and only wore them 1-2 times. So----I'm still working on it!

My First Blog!

Well it was my New Years resolution to start Blogging, so here I am! My name is Melissa, I am the designer and creator behind Gumdrop*Shop, a boutique custom clothing company for little girls. Inspired to begin designing after the birth of my twin girls I dove head into the ebay boutique world. I am a proud member of Poppyst boutique.

A little about me

I have been married for 8 years this March, to my best friend. WE have four beautiful children two boys 7 and 5, and twin girls 2 1/2(my models).

I began sewing in 4-H when I was 10. My mom was a wonderful seamstress and a great teacher. In Highschool I designed my own formal gowns, and my mom made them for me- since I was to busy, lol.

My Favorite Items of the week

I just love this little bracelet and the matching wallet. It is simple sweet and slightly tough! Its made by the same company that makes all of the wonderful girly shoes----Bear Feet!

I am anxiously awaiting my newest fabric- Ginger Blossom. Ginger Blossom fabric is designed by a fellow ebayer- Sandi Henderson of PortabelloPixie. The fabric is due to arrive this Spring. The colors and designs of each fabric in the line are delicious, I will feel slightly sad cutting into them.
